Artist:
GEOFFREY NEWCOMB
About This Artist:
I did both these songs entirely myself directly on my PC (not counting the
incorporation of the two other MIDI files on Cars), using Cakewalk and Sound
Forge mainly. All the instruments are the General MIDI sounds on my sound
card. I have been a MIDI hobbyist for years, but I began working with digital
audio only in the last two years. It's a slow unforgiving process, and
that's what orginally inspired me to do Noise Noise. It started out in life
as a test file for Noise Reduction programs. The bleeps and bloops you hear
occasionally are from the Demo version of Sonic Foundry's Direct-X NR
plug-in, and are supposed to be destructive, so you can hear how the program
works without being able to use it, but I thought they fit the character of
the piece (at least my version of it) so I just left them in, shuffling them
around a little to add emphasis in certain places.
Cars was from my first home-cooked CD, appropriately titled "Newcomb:
Digital". On this album I redid a bunch of songs I had originally covered
using just 4 Track tape. I deliberately selected songs that would appeal to
a wider audience than I usually go for, (like ten people instead of five), so
I did Cars since I felt I had to get something by Numan in there, but wanted
to do something people might recognize. Of course, I like the song very
much, too!
I've been a Numan fan since the '80s. My favorite Numan album is Dance.
Some of the other acts I have liked and covered are Bowie, the Talking Heads,
Depeche Mode, Lou Reed, this list goes on and on, but Numan is definitely a
favorite. I also do an album of MIDI piano music every year for XMAS. This
year I'm working on music by Liszt.
This version of Cars is pretty faithful to the original, and incorporates
3 separate MIDI versions of the song, my own, and two others which I
downloaded from the Internet. I'm afraid I don't remember now where I
downloaded the other two MIDI files from, but I think they're pretty much the
only two out there.
